Gabbiani Drawing

Signed drawing on one side of cream sheet by Gabbiani,  a Baroque painter in the 17th c.

Drawing of a Madonnaesque female in pencil, surrounded by small black ink drawings of different people in hats and formal outfits.

Anton Domenico Gabbiani (1652-1726) was a Florentine working for the Medici court under the court painter Sustermanns. He was described as a “Cortoneschi” as he was regarded as a late follower of Pietro da Cortona.

The reverse is a brown ink drawing with wash of a water bearer, it looks like it has been cropped with figures falling off the page. It has been suggested that this may be by Domenico Piola, a late Baroque painter from Genova (1627-1703).

Bought at auction in the North of England in 2021.

Dimensions: 26 x 19.5 cm
